It’s that time of the year again when the Cyber Girls Fellowship for African Females starts in earnest. Cyber Girls Fellowship is a project that is under the CyberSafe Foundation. A foundation that is passionate about cyber security, grooming the girl child, and bridging the inequality gap. So, as a young African female, if you know you have a flair for tech, cyber security, Artificial Intelligence (AI), then, you might want to check this out. This is because more girls are needed to take up tech jobs and enjoy the opportunities that come with them. CyberSafe Foundation
The CyberSafe Foundation is a Non-Governmental Organization with a mission to facilitate pockets of changes that ensure a safer internet for everyone with digital access in Africa. Also, they have lots of projects that are beneficial to the African community at large and to the girl child.
Furthermore, through one of their initiatives called #NoGoFallMaga, they have been able to launch cyber security awareness campaigns. This campaign has reached over two million people. Not only that, they regularly organize cyber security awareness training for over four thousand SMEs. Again, CyberSafe launched Africa’s very first storified cyber security awareness handbook and possibly Africa’s first afrobeat cyber security awareness song. Through these, and many more ways, CyberSafe has contributed greatly to the fight against cybercrime.
Aside from their NoGoFallMaga initiative, other of their initiatives include: Cybersmart Child, Shine Your Eye, and CyberGirls
Cyber Girls Fellowship
Cyber Girls Fellowship is a one-year fellowship program of the CyberSafe Foundation. Ideally, this fellowship equips girls with globally sought-after cyber security skills. Also, it will help them to seize the opportunities within Africa and across the globe. More so, this CyberSafe Foundation initiative contributes to achieving SDGs1 No poverty, 4- Education, 10- Reduced inequalities.
Furthermore, their objective is to improve the socio-economic well-being of girls and women living in underserved communities in Africa. By providing cyber security training, mentorship, and internship/job shadowing opportunities that can potentially lift them out of poverty.
CyberGirls Learning Paths
In the cyberGirls foundation, the learning journey has always been designed, to begin with, digital literacy and systemic progress from basic cyber security concepts to more specialized niche cyber security learning. So, midway through the fellowship, the beneficiaries will choose and focus on one of the following career paths:
- Threat Intelligence
This is learning how to use data generated by networks, applications, and other IT infrastructure to assess and improve an organization’s security posture.
- Cloud Security
Learn and apply basic network security techniques in the cloud environment, assess levels of risk and recent vulnerabilities that apply to cloud services.
- Penetration/Vulnerability Testing
Learn the basics of penetration/vulnerability testing. Using software and command-line tools for scanning, reckoning, and exploitation.
- Incident Analysis/Response (SOC ANALYST LEVEL 1)
Covers various incident analysis tools and techniques that support vulnerability analysis, intrusion detection, attack protection, and network/resources repair.
- IT Security Audit
Now, this covers the fundamental knowledge of security auditing. What IT Security Audit is, its importance, and how it can be conducted.
Eligibility
Who can be part of this fellowship?
- Girls and women aged 18-28 years old
- You must be very Interested in starting a career in cyber security
- Be truly willing to commit 7 months to the fellowship
- The program is for both Undergraduates and graduates of any field of study
- Residents in Nigeria, Ghana. Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, and Zambia.
Both virtual and on-site learning is available for candidates in Nigeria and Ghana.
However, only virtual learning is available for other countries.
Importantly, the training runs weekly from Monday to Friday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. However, training will not hold on Nigerian national holidays dates.
